We were so pleased to hear that our former Chair, Paul Madden, has been posthumously awarded the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his significant service to the community through social welfare organisations, social policy development, and the arts.
Paul was involved with St Kilda Community Housing for decades, including 13 years as Chair, and his influence on our organisation has been both profound and enduring. His commitment to those doing it tough—people on the margins, people experiencing homelessness and trauma, those too often overlooked—shaped who we are and how we work.
Paul brought an extraordinary mix of heart, intellect, and practical skill to his leadership. Whether he was navigating policy, engaging with staff, or celebrating a renter’s achievements, Paul was always hands-on and deeply connected to our mission. His kindness, belief in people, and fierce advocacy for safe and affordable housing remain at the heart of everything we do.
Paul was instrumental in securing agreements and funding for Wellington Street Common Ground, a project that will soon deliver life changing homes and support for 26 long term rough sleepers. Paul would have loved to have seen this project up and running. (see update in this edition)
This recognition is a fitting tribute to someone who truly made a difference, to our organisation, our renters, and the broader community.
